Motorcyclist killed, three hurt by falling trees in Sibu


SIBU: A motorcyclist was killed and three others sustained injuries after they were struck by trees uprooted by strong winds in two separate incidents on Thursday (July 17) night.

A storm, accompanied by powerful winds, swept through Sibu, Kanowit and Mukah.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, 43-year-old Pakistan national Muhammad Ishaq was fatally struck by a falling tree along Jalan Besar Kampung Penat, Mukah, at around 9pm.

"Firefighters at the scene had to saw through the fallen tree to reach the victim, who was pinned underneath," the department said.

Paramedics from Hospital Mukah confirmed that he had died on the spot, it added.

In a separate incident in Kanowit, three people – a 33-year-old woman, an eight-year-old girl, and a 14-year-old boy – sustained minor injuries when a tree fell onto their four-wheel-drive vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 9pm as they were travelling along a village road in Sungai Ranan.
